AUDITION NOTICE - SEEKING DANCERS FOR A DANCE FILM PROJECT:
Maraya Performing Arts (MPA) seeks dancers for “Towards Belonging,” a dance theatre film presented by La Jolla Playhouse’s 2020 Digital Without Walls Series.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: “Towards Belonging” is a brand new dance theater film featuring choreography by Anjanette Maraya-Ramey and spoken word poetry by Khalil Bleux. The project aims to uplift the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), while celebrating the diversity and vibrancy of Southeast San Diego. The choreography will be site specific, and all rehearsals and filming will take place outdoors. The project will be filmed in October 2020 at Writerz Blok (a graffiti yard within the Arts Park at Chollas Creek - hosted by the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation).
SEEKING: We are looking for 1-2 open minded, expressive, dancers that are collaborative in nature, and comfortable with dancing choreography outdoors. (Masks and social distancing safety protocols will be strictly enforced). Maraya Performing Arts welcomes and encourages dancers of diverse backgrounds and abilities to apply. While the movement is contemporary based, we are seeking dancers who feel comfortable adding their own interpretations to movement phrase work provided by the choreographer. TIME COMMITMENT: This would be a 25 hour time commitment over the course of a two-week period. Selected dancers need to be available for all dates and times listed:
Saturday October 24th, 2020 - 3:30-7:30 PM
Sunday October 25th, 2020 - 10AM-7PM
Saturday October 31st, 2020 - 3:30-7:30PM
Sunday November 1st, 2020 - 10AM-7PM
PAYMENT: Dancer(s) will be paid hourly at the rate of $25 per hour, and will be hired as a temporary W-2 contracted employee of Maraya Performing Arts. *This is a non-union production.
IMPORTANT AUDITION INFORMATION:
DATE: Sunday, October 4, 2020 from 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Auditions will occur in 1 hour time slots with limited spots available to accommodate social distancing safety protocols. Please specify your availability when registering. We will do our very best to accommodate your time preferences, but we can not make any guarantees.
LOCATION: The audition will take place at: Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation Outdoor Amphitheater (310 Euclid Ave, San Diego, CA 92114) You can park in Market Creek Center parking lot. The Amphitheater is located behind retail shops.
COME PREPARED: Social distancing and strict safety protocols will be strictly enforced. Auditions will take place outdoors on concrete. Please wear comfortable tennis shoes/trainers and bring plenty of water. Everyone is required to wear masks before, during and after the audition. The audition will consist of learning a short modern/contemporary phrase and an opportunity to showcase your improvisation and freestyle movement ideas as well! There are no bathrooms on site at the amphitheater but bathrooms in retail center shops (Food 4 Less, etc.) can be accessed.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED: Due to COVID and safety protocols, we are unable to take walk up auditions. All interested dancers need to register in advance to reserve their audition time slot, by completing our Google Form here.
AUDITION RESULTS: Participants will be notified of audition results via email within 24-48 hours of audition date.
